Since suffering a narrow loss to Ashland that came down to the final match of the night, the Dedham wrestling team has been on fire the last two-plus weeks, ripping off three straight dual meet wins and taking home the team crown at the Weymouth Invitational on Jan. 10.
In Weymouth, the Marauders topped a field of 14 schools with 210.5 points, edging Xaverian, which was runner-up with 202. Dedham earned top-4 placements in nine of the 13 weight classes.
Two Marauders went a perfect 4-0 to claim individual titles, senior Ryan Talon-Kelly at 132 pounds and junior Manuel Garcia at 138. Talon-Kelly had a dominant run with three pins, including in the final, and a technical fall. Garcia began with two pins before recording a pair of decisions.
Dedham also got seconds from sophomore Anthony Sateriale (113) and senior Falco Heaslip (165), thirds from senior Anthony Guzman (106) and junior Mason McDonald (126), and fourths from freshman Rudolf Heaslip (144) and seniors Josh Stivaletta (175) and Danny O’Brien (190).
This past Saturday, Dedham sought a step-up in competition at the Woburn Invitational, featuring 21 programs from all over New England. The Marauders were 10th as a team with 69.5 points. Sateriale was the lone Dedham wrestler to place, taking fourth at 113. Central Catholic ran away with the overall title with 272 points.
Dedham picked up a 51-29 win against Hopkinton between the two invitationals, then won on back-to-back nights this week, cruising past Bellingham 60-15 on Senior Night on Tuesday and following up by crushing Quincy on Wednesday, 66-4
Seven Marauders — Guzman, Sateriale, Garcia, Stivaletta, O’Brien as well as juniors Matthew Salas (120) and John Kelly (215) — went 3-0 in the dual-meet triumphs.
Dedham, which is now 2-2 in the Tri-Valley League, still has a pair league meets left at Norton and Norwood as well as quads at Watertown, Cambridge and North Reading before heading to the Division 3 Central sectional at Holliston on Feb. 14.
Girls swim stays hot in pool
The Dedham girls swim team has now won five of its last six dual meets after dropping its season opener following a 99-81 non-league win over Canton on Wednesday.
The junior duo of Samantha Buhlman and Audrey Tartaglia powered the victory, each posting a pair of individual wins at their home pool and capping the meet by joining seniors Mary Kate Megan and Layla Radosta in a victory in the 400-meter freestyle relay.
Buhlman took first in the 50 free (27.61) and 100 free (1:02.65), while Tartaglia did the same in the 500 free (6:25.06) and the 200 individual medley (2:41.57). Dedham also got individual wins from Megan in the 200 free in 2:27.73 and junior Keira Smid, who competed only against her Marauders teammates but still racked up 238.17 points.

The Marauders, which went non-scoring with two events left after the 100 backstroke, began the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay, despite the ‘A’ team getting disqualified. The quartet of sophomore Cora Connelly, senior Eleni Pateras, senior Mary Lupianez and junior Roszlynn Akula stepped up to swim 2:21.57 for first.
On the boys side, Dedham dropped a 99-70 decision to fall to 2-5 overall. The Marauders were only able to manage two wins on the day, including a tight contest in the 50 free as senior Jack Haven came out victorious in 24.83, edging Canton’s Ryan Hickey by 0.05 seconds.
Star diver Sean Leahy was also a winner as the only male diving entrant, with the senior piling up a score of 269.55.
Both Dedham squads have one regular season meets left, hosting Dover-Sherborn on Monday, then competes in the Tri-Valley League Showcase at Boston Sports Institute in Wellesley on Feb. 1.
Track teams split finale
Dedham forged a split in its final dual meets of the season against Holliston at Brandeis, with the boys coming away with a 61-34 win to finish 3-2 and the girls wrapping up at 2-3 after a 56-39 loss on Thursday night.
The boys appear to be ramping up well entering next Saturday’s Tri-Valley League Showcase at The Track at New Balance in Brighton, winning seven individual events. many in personal or season bests.
As has been typical throughout the season, the Marauders showed off their strength in the distance events. Junior twins Levon and Townsend battled to finish in the 1,000 meters as Levon ran a season-best 2:44.32 for the win, less than a second ahead of Townsend’s personal-best 2:44.96.
Junior Jeremy Chang took the mile in 4:55.73 and senior Andrew Loughran was first in the 2-mile in 10:40.74.
Senior Cameron Turell was Dedham’s only double-winner individually, going 8.98 seconds in the 55 hurdles and leaping 17-10 1/2 in the long jump.
Senior Niko Tigliandis (5-10) and sophomore Aaiden Saint Louis (5-4) each set personal bests in going 1-2 in the high jump. Junior Bradley Bertrand (41-8 1/2) and senior Amin Roumali (41-1 3/4) also took the top two spots in the shot put.
Junior Amariah Montaque continued her impressive campaign for the girls with two more individual wins, running 8.93 in the 55 hurdles and clearing a personal-best 5-10 in the high jump.
Three other Marauders were winners — junior Molly Hernon in the 600 in 1:48.27, sophomore Ally Finkel in the 2-mile in 12:36.41 and junior Julie MacLean in the long jump in 14-0.
